"The Leftovers and all of its cast, except for Ann Dowd: One of the best, if not the best, seasons of television got overlooked last year, along with all of its fine actors. I figured there’s no way Emmy voters could completely whiff on The Leftovers again, especially after it delivered such a deep, soulful, fantastic final season. But nope, no outstanding drama nomination for this wonderful HBO series, because apparently frickin’ House of Cards needed to get a nod again. There was also nothing for Justin Theroux, or Carrie Coon (although she did get nominated for Fargo), or Christopher Eccleston, or anybody else except Ann Dowd, who earned her two first-ever Emmy nominations today, one for her guest appearance as bizarro-world Secretary of State Patti Levin on The Leftovers and another for her intimidating Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid’s Tale. Maybe all the nominations The Leftovers were supposed to get suddenly departed? That is the only explanation that makes sense."

"It’s no secret that we’re obsessed with The Leftovers, HBO’s strange and beautiful drama that wrapped its final season this June. But there’s a good reason for that: The series truly is one of the best that TV has ever produced. Between its precise and surreal scripts written by Damon Lindelof and his team, its stunning direction from the visionary Mimi Leder, and its unforgettable performances from Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon in particular, The Leftovers was brimming over with gorgeous craftsmanship that deserved to be acknowledged by the Emmys. Instead, The Leftovers will be yet another in a long line of shows the awards failed to recognize, with Ann Dowd snagging the only nomination (in the Outstanding Guest Actress category) that the show will ever receive. That’s a shame and, more frankly, an embarrassment."

"As interesting as the Drama category might be, there’s a glaring exception that it is my contractual obligation as a TV critic to complain about. The Leftovers was a magnificent show, and 2017 was the Academy’s final chance to recognize it. Instead, The Leftovers didn’t get a series nomination; Mimi Leder, so crucial to its success, didn’t get a directing nomination; and Carrie Coon didn’t get an acting nomination (for her work as Nora Durst, at least). Ann Dowd’s Guest Actress nod for her single-episode reappearance as cult leader/figment of Kevin Garvey’s subconscious Patti Levin managed to make it in there, but otherwise, the Academy just squandered its chance to honor one of the best shows of the past five years in its final year of eligibility. What a bummer."
