With The Walking Dead coming out on DVD next week, the show’s writer-producer and original comic book’s creator Robert Kirkman answers some of our burning questions about the second season, the upcoming video game and more.

Q: What makes the DVD a must buy for fans?

ROBERT KIRKMAN: There’s a lot of cool behind-the-scenes footage, we had a great guy on set every minute of every day to catch a lot of candid footage and it’s put into bunch of documentaries. Plus, of course, we have the six episodes. I love that it’s coming out now instead of like some TV shows that put out the DVD right before the next season. It always bugs me when I want to re-watch the last season of Lost but I can’t watch 22 episodes in the four days just before the new season starts. I understand that they do it for marketing reasons, but I wish they would give us more time.

Exactly. How are things going on season 2?

Great. We’re mapping out everything. We got a lot of cool ideas. Everyone here is mindful of how well received the first season was. We’re breaking our backs, story wise, to make sure the next season is twice is good, or three times as good, with a lot of twists and turns and pushing the envelop of what you can do on TV.

The first season alternated mainly between the camp site and Atlanta. What will the setting be for season 2?

I don’t know if I can go into that, but I know [showrunner Frank Darabont] has said we’re going to see Hershel’s farm. We’re looking to take some picturesque rural landscapes and playing with that and coming up with some cool zombie visuals. We’ll see some of the locations of the first season, but we’re going to mainly focus on breaking new ground. Oh, and we’re going to feature a lava planet.

Of course, the survivors have to stop at Mustafar. How much Rick vs. Shane drama is going to play into season 2?

That’s definitely the core dynamic that’s going on, but there’s a lot of other interesting stuff in the mix. We’re going to seeing a lot of Andrea and a lot more of Laurie.

How much is Frank Darabont writing/directing?

He’s focusing on writing. He’s in writers room every day. I’m writing some episodes and he’s writing some episodes. We’re trying to figure out what we’re doing with the directing right now. The logistics and also being big part of the writers room will limit his time.

Is the great Bear McCreary staying on as composer?

Yes.

And we still have to wait until October?

Yes, that’s pretty public at this point. That’s the target.

The Walking Dead will be at Comic-Con, I assume?

Oh yeah, indeed. We’re going to have a 12-foot-tall zombie costume

I’ve played through Left 4 Dead, so what will the upcoming Walking Dead video game bring new to the genre?

Left 4 Dead is much more focused on action. On of the key aspects of Walking Dead is it focuses on characters and the emotion, and that theme is very much alive in the game, and luckily with modern games you can actually do that.

Anything else you can tease to from about season 2?

We’ve been talking to [zombie effects master] Greg Nicotero a lot about some cool zombie stuff he has planned. As much as this show pushed the envelope of gore on TV, the joy of seeing the best zombies ever done on a TV show every week, all I can say you haven’t seen anything yet.

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has confirmed more details about the upcoming second season. He told Give Me My Remote that the new run will introduce more characters from the original comic, including farm-owner Hershel and his daughter Maggie.

The writer added that future episodes will continue "ramping up everything that we did in the first season".

Kirkman also dismissed the suggestion that the television show has strayed too far from the original comic.

Laurie Holden, co-star of The Walking Dead, dropped some interesting news on the audience attending C2E2 today. The actress, known on the series as "Andrea," said Stephen King is in talks to pen an episode of Walking Dead in season 2. This really shouldn't come as any shocker as series producer Frank Darabont has had a long creative relationship with the author. Darabont adapted The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist. It was also revealed Darabont will likely not direct the first episode of season 2, however, he will helm an episode later in the year.

Q: How did you end up on The Walking Dead?

A: I submitted a tape audition. It was really a surprise to get the opportunity to submit. I got a call from my agent and he asked me to get it in by the next day. So I used the skills of my wonderful husband [Laughs] to tape it and we sent it the next morning. Weeks passed. Then one day, I had my kids in the car and we were getting ready to go to a movie and the phone rang. It was my agent and he said, "Frank Darabont says your his first choice for this role." I started screaming and my kids wanted to know what was wrong with me.

Q: At what point did you learn that Jacqui wouldn't survive the finale?

A: With the draft of the final episode. I literally, like the survivors on The Walking Dead, lived day to day not knowing what to expect. One of the crew, Darryl, who does all the explosive stuff, came up to me and said something like, "We told Frank we don't want to kill you." [Laughs] It was more awkward for everyone else than it was for me. Even the director of the episode, I think he too felt a little awkward. I tried to put him at ease. Let's just do our job and move on. It's okay.

Q: You've been in several horror films. What do you think suits you to the genre?

A: It might have something to do with the fact that I'm an actress who comes to it as an older woman. There is something interesting about a face that has lived. When we had a couple days off, I played tennis and ended up getting hit in the face with a tennis racket. I showed up on set with a nice little scar. The make-up people wanted to know -- do we want to try to hide it? We decided she's been in a zombie apocalypse; it's okay if she's got a scar on her face. I love roles where it's not about being perfect or being beautiful, where there is more of an interest in what's going on inside the character.

Q: What did you learn about surviving an apocalypse from playing Jacqui?

A: You have to form new relationships. Even though she was a part of the group and cared about the group, she didn't have anybody to give her a sense of starting anew. There's research that people live longer when they have social relationships to keep that part of their hearts alive. I have this fantasy that Morgan came to rescue me and then he and I could raise his adorable son. That's the kind of thing that keeps you alive.

Q: Jacqui knows a lot about city sewer systems. Do you have any surprising areas of expertise?

A: When I went to school, it was to be an electrical engineer. I graduated with a degree in a industrial management and worked in trucking for a couple of years. Then I decided that I was bored with the trucking industry and that I would go back to graduate school. I have a masters in African-American literature and I got a PhD in American Literature. I spent a number of years teaching as a professor in the university system. Then I turned forty and decided I was going to be the woman I wanted to be! [Laughs] As Emily Dickinson, one of my favorite poets wrote, "All but death can be adjusted." If you don't like some choice you made, change it.

Q: What about Jacqui's choice to stay at the CDC? Do you think you could do what she did?

A: I would love to think that I would have that kind of core certainty, that sense of clarity about myself and my life, but I'm not sure that I would. I really considered it to be an honor, going out in a flame of glory like that. And the fact that it wasn't a bite. It had more to do with a larger philosophical consideration of quality of life. Are you really surviving if you can't live free?

Q: Does your whole life flash before your eyes when you're pretending to die?

A: Absolutely. I had to say goodbye to a lot of the people and things that I love about living, because I love life. I've tried to live it in many different ways. I think she felt she had very few choices in front of her. Maybe that is what she found to be unacceptable.

The Walking Dead's creator has revealed that Stan Lee wants a cameo on the show. Speaking to The AV Club, Robert Kirkman explained that a number of his friends have asked to play zombies in the series. "I'd like to be able to tell everyone yes, but there are only so many zombies you can get into a show," he said. "And everyone on the show has friends that are doing that. We'll probably never run out of zombies." Kirkman added that some celebrities may appear in future episodes, saying: "There are a few people who have asked me, and there may be some fun cameos for comics fans popping up in the second season. I don't want to call these people out - it might annoy them. Honestly, Stan Lee asked to be a zombie on the show - that's possible."

Kirkman also denied rumours that Charlie Sheen will have a cameo, joking: "I wish!"

He continued: "We are talking to Mel Gibson, though... Of course I am [kidding]. I would like to know where all these rumours are starting. I'll start creating rumours for fun. I'd just love to talk to Mel Gibson. How interesting would that be?"
