Spartacus: Gods of the Arena Latest News
According to a Starz press release dated 19 July, 2010, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena has
began production in August, 2010 and will air in early 2011. On 1
September, 2010, Lesley-Ann Brandt (Naevia) stated on her Facebook page
that Episode 2 is nearly finished filming and the cast has begun
readings of Episode 3.
Gods of the Arena focuses on the House of Batiatus prior to
the arrival of Spartacus, while telling the story of Gannicus (played by
Australian actor Dustin Clare) and his struggle to become the first
gladiator from the House of Batiatus to earn the title Champion of
Capua.
As Gods of the Arena begins, the Batiatus from Blood and Sand
(Josh Hannah) is not yet the head of the House of Batiatus. Gannicus is
the head gladiator at the Batiatus ludus, but the House of Batiatus has
not yet acquired the necessary respect in Roman society that will allow
its gladiators to vie for the title of Champion of Capua. Gannicus must
fight his way up the ranks in the arena, thus affording him the
opportunity to become the Champion.
On 24 July, 2010, AUSXIP Spartacus News posted the following information about Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.
This information was gathered from Tweets sent by Spartacus_Starz and
Moryan (which included Tweets from Executive Producer Steven S.
DeKnight).
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena Cast and Characters
- Spartacus will appear in the first and last episodes of Gods of the Arena
- John
Hannah (Batiatus) says two or three flashback episodes involving the
ludus of Batiatus had originally been planned as part of Spartacus: Vengeance (Season 2), but Whitfield's illness gave the producers a chance to expand on this idea- The wife of Oenomaus (Doctore) and the father of Batiatus will have their stories disclosed in Gods of the Arena instead of in Vengeance as originally planned
- Varro, the close friend of Spartacus who died in Blood and Sand, will not be appearing in Gods of the Arena. An attempt was made to modify the storyline to include Varro, but the efforts proved too difficult.
- Much to the delight of fans, Doctore will play a major role in Gods of the Arena
Joining Dustin Clare (Gannicus) as new and central characters in Gods of the Arena are Jaime Murray (Gaia) and Marisa Ramirez (Melitta). Reprising roles first seen in Blood and Sand
are Josh Hannah (Quintus Batiatus), Lucy Lawless (Lucretia), Peter
Mensah (Oenomaus), Nick E. Tarabay (Asher), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Naevia),
Manu Bennett (Crixus), Antonio Te Maioha (Barca), Craig Walsh-Wrightson
(Solonius), and Andy Whitfield (Spartacus).
Gods of the Arena will provide audiences with a deeper look at several main characters from Blood and Sand as well as introducing new characters to the world of Spartacus. A quick character sketch for Gods of the Arena is found below:
