speculation: mom had to save bo from something really bad once (possibly involving his father or father's death, kids in school, or possibly even the coach) and two things happened: mother coped with loss of bad husband by overparenting bo, and bo lost nearly all sense of efficacy. he starts to grow up and gain a sense of mastery again, which leads to struggle with mom, who continually asserts herself as a confident savior figure.

I think Bo was most certainly abused. His avoidance of sex for one thing in this "real" relationship seemed odd. I think there are only 4 episodes left so I wonder what will be revealed about him. The shower scene also showed his "shame" over what he had done and to me shows some kind of issue with sex/sexual identity. When I saw a preview previous to the lates episode, something in me said that Bo will basically kill Seth by the end of this season (or attempt to) and end up in jail or dead (killed by Kenny). We know he is capable of violence (ie breaking that kid's arm) and he think he's already killed before (his dad). There will be no good end for Bo...Like the "bad cop" last season he will be found out...makes me wonder if that is the writer's formula for each season - one bad seed spoils the bunch...
