AMC has announced that Hell on Wheels has been renewed for a fifth and final season, which will consist of 14 episodes. The first seven episodes will air in the summer of 2015, with the final seven to premiere in 2016.
“With season five of Hell on Wheels, we are proud to bring our trans-continental journey to conclusion for the large, loyal audience that has traveled with Cullen Bohannon and his crew for so many years,” said AMC President Charlie Collier. “We look forward to appropriately honoring Hell on Wheels in this final season. Enormous thanks to the terrific writers, cast and crew for all they have achieved and for all that lies ahead in the Wild West.”
Averaging 3.4 million viewers in L+3 across its first 10 episodes of the season, Hell on Wheels managed a move that not many shows could in its transition to Saturdays. AMC helped the show’s cause by acquiring an extensive catalog of western movies that airs alongside it, a move that exposed Hell on Wheels to an audience who might not have even known of its existence otherwise. Splitting the final season allows AMC to continue reaping the benefits of Hell on Wheels while trying to find its next big Sunday dramas; however, the success of the Anson Mount-starring western might have AMC considering the benefits of ordering older-skewing dramas and using their movie catalog to find an audience for them.
Created by Joe and Tony Gayton, and currently showran by John Wirth, Hell on Wheels stars Mount, Colm Meaney, Phil Burke, Christopher Heyerdahl, and Robin McLeavy.
Hell on Wheels airs Saturdays at 9:00 on AMC.
